Chapter Ten

T hey arrived at Louise’s home. Andrew had brought an extra case of beer. All Dior’s friends were there, and they were delighted to see her. Eventually, everyone paired off with one another to have their dinner. The drinks were handed around and they sat talking and joking easily with one another. Evan had cooked the steaks, which proved the expertise of his cooking skills. Louise’s baked potatoes, salad, and crusty rolls added to a perfect dinner. After dinner, her friends encouraged Dior to do her clever impersonations of Cher, Dolly, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and many more interspersed with quips of Groucho Marks. They laughed and laughed at her, and she truly enjoyed making people laugh. Evan was amazed at her talents, as the entertainment ended. They gather in different groups, the boys with the boys, and the girls with the girls. They were having a great time. Evan kept Dior in his line of vision, coming often to her to put his hand on her back to inquire if she needed another drink or more to eat.

Dior blushed each time, Evan put his hand on her, and her dear friends were teasing her. “You like him, Dior!” Louise and Marilyn said in unison.

“What’s not to like. He is very kind and considerate. He arrived at my door with a bouquet” she explained, her face turning a charming pink when her eyes met Evan's from across the yard, a small smile on his face, for her only. “You both are forgetting my mother. She will scare him off. I dare not get my hopes up.”

Louise and Marilyn looked at Dior with sadness on their faces. What can we do to help this budding romance? You name it and we will help you as much as we can,” they said as they looked reassuring at Dior.

“Both of you have been such good friends and without you all I wouldn’t have a life at all, so I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. What will be, will be, I guess.”

Evan came over to join them, his hand gently touching the small of her back as he said, “We should think of leaving Dior.” he whispered in her ear. Dior nodded her agreement. Turning to Louise, Evan said “The cleanup is all done, Louise, it is a workday tomorrow, so we will take our leave. Thank you for a lovely dinner and the friendship extended. It is very much appreciated.” he said very politely and sincerely, gently turning Dior towards the truck he said, “Say goodnight to the nice people,” he told Dior as their friends watched them leave.

“Goodnight nice people” Dior called out mischievously, as they waved their goodbyes to their friends.

As they drove home, they exchanged with one another the different highlights of the talk and jokes of the evening. How impressed he had been with her impersonations of all those different voices. She told him that she often dressed up in costume to entertain at
